Inderjeet Singh becomes the first Indian shot putter
to qualify for the Rio Olympics by winning a gold at the Asian Athletics
Championship in Wuhan on Wednesday. The 27-year-old, who plays for Haryana at
the National level won the gold by throwing a distance of 20.41 meters while
his closest opponent Chang Ming Huang of Taipei threw at 19.56 meters. However
he lost the joy of winning the gold soon when he felt he is jobless yet.
He said he is
trying to find a reasonable job for the past two years and despite notable
displays at World University Games and now at the Asian Championships, he is
jobless. The Asian champion added neither he has a job permanently nor a big
sponsorship.Olympic qualifier further said his brother gives him some money because he has no financial resources and he also consumed funds saved by his
father before death.
He added one
of his Canadian national relatives also support him. Inderjeet further said
only signs of hope appeared a year ago when a private firm Medal Hunt funded
him with RS 15,000 per month. He noted it has been increased to Rs 30,000 per
month after his qualification for the Olympics but he afraids this support will
last till the Olympics only. The Target Olympics Podium Scheme (TOPS) has not
included Inderjeet, despite being the first thrower of India to qualify for Rio
2016, in its first list of players identified as potential medalists.
