The Black Sticks were given a little bit tough time
by Japan to defeat them 2-1 at the FIH World League Semifinals in Argentina.
The win gets them close one step towards qualifying the Rio Olympics. The teams
which finish in top three will automatically qualify for next year’s games. New
Zealand scored early against Japan in the fourth minute through Steve Edwards.
The second goal was scored by skipper Simon Child from a penalty corner. New
Zealand was unable to score any more goals against a determined side Japan who
ultimately scored through Kenji Kitazato in the final minute.
New Zealand’s defensive effort proved vital with
Kane Russell and goalkeeper Devon Manchester staring over the back half of the
game. Assistant coach of New Zealand Bryce Collins said that it was delighting
New Zealand clicked at the right time and did what was required to keep control
of the game against an energetic Japanese side. Collins explained they just
focused to improve their basics, attacking the field and passing and receiving
the ball well. The coach said further they created a lot more chances than
their match against Egypt because they improved their speed and execution.
He added they were not strong defensive wise in the
second half but it was committed and disciplined defensive display throughout
that period. New Zealand is going to play against world No 2 the Netherlands on
Monday and Collins said the Dutch are very tough side against which they need
to work hard to keep possession of the ball because they are expert at creating
and holding possession.
